The newest craze these days is undoubtedly over action cameras. Every second guy wants one and every fifth guy probably owns one. And the craze is quite understandable. With more and more people travelling and with social media so pervasive, it's only obvious that people would want to upload clips from their time gallivanting over the world; after all, what's Instagram for? And what better way to shoot those epic clips which make their mates back home writhe with envy than action cams capable of shooting high quality videos, while also being practically unbreakable and nature-proof.
But often, if not always, the path to making your friends burn with jealousy involves burning a hole in your wallet first. Action cameras today are more expensive than ever, and buying one can be quite a struggle when you're on a budget. We've got you covered though; here's our take on the best action cameras you can buy on a budget.
Best Budget Action Camera
GoPro's got a reputation for being one of the best in the action camera, as well a reputation for being one of the most expensive. While the former is understandable, the latter is not wholly deserved. This is definitely the camera you're looking to buy if you're on a budget but still want to take perfect clips on your next adventure.
The camera boasts capabilities of taking 1080p clips at 30fps and 720p clips at 60fps. To an advanced action-cam user, that's not much to boast about. But at that budget, it's more than you can ask for. You'll still get high quality images with it's 5MP camera, enough if you're looking for great detail and a greater Instagram following.
Added to all this is GoPro's penchant user-friendliness. The camera is incredibly easy to use, making it even more suited to beginners on a budget. It's also highly durable and waterproof till 131 feet. The microphone quality isn't too bad either and the Timelapse and Burst capabilities act as a cherry on top. Undoubtedly the camera you should look to buy if you're on a budget.
Cheapest Action Camera
Contour Roam 2
We recommend that you sit down before reading this; if you don't, there's a good chance that you'll drop after hearing the price of this camera. Click on the "view on amazon.com" below to check the price. Now you're probably wondering how low on features a camera must be to be priced that low. It's best that you keep sitting down for a bit longer. For if the price didn't shock you, what you get for it surely will.
The first thing that one notices about the Contour Roam 2 is it's beautiful design. The barrel shaped camera lends impeccable style when worn as a helmet camera, while its sleek shape makes it very easy to grip onto as well. But there's a whole host of features, besides its style, which makes this a wonderful choice.
Delivering great video qualities of 1080p at 30fps and 720p at 60fps, the camera has the same specs as the higher priced GoPro HERO. It's also waterproof till 1 meter without a case and till 60 meters with it, an astounding achievement for that price. It's also got a great battery life of around 3 hours, meaning that you can go on those long hikes with the confidence that you'll be able to record the scenery.
The only downside is that the camera needs to be connected to a PC every time you need to switch video modes. It can get a bit annoying at times and is also the reason disqualifying the Contour from taking the place of the GoPro as the best budget action camera. It's likely, though, that you won't need to change the video mode much so it's simply a minor setback for only a few people. If the amazing price can make you look over this minor flaw, the Contour should definitely be on your shopping list.
